15 Unusual Uses for Banana Peels

Strange fact about me: I can’t stand bananas. Accordingly, they still have banana bread as a sleep aid, and their use to prevent aphids from roses. wait what?? Seriously, the banana peels in their sleeves are a bit of a surprise.

What’s in a banana peel?

Bananas are high in carbs, potassium, and vitamins C and B. The skin also has a healthy personality. One nutrient disorder is:

  • Potassium
  • Calcium
  • Iron
  • Manganese
  • Bromine
  • Phenolic compounds
  • Carotenoids such as beta carotene and lutein

You will find some root metals, including strontium. Our body naturally has some strength, which can help strengthen teeth and bones.

We need carotenoids for a healthy outlook. An article in 2012 American Journal of Clinical Nutrition Looked at the role of carotenoids in eye protection. Lutein helps our eyes filter light and protects tissues from sun damage, the researchers said. Foods rich in lutein and other carotenoids do the same with the skin and help protect against sun damage.

Different cultures have used banana peels for centuries to help alleviate health concerns, and now science has backed it.

Germ-fighting banana peels

Like older berry juice, oregano, and other plants, banana peels are high in antioxidant phenols. Not only this, with the help of banana peels you can do wonders. Researchers have found that the compounds in banana peels fight off a number of germs that cause wound infections. In one study, it was shown to be effective against yeast Candida albanians.

Antioxidants in banana peels

In 2011, researchers looked at the antioxidant properties of various banana peels. They found that without the peel, green banana peels have more antioxidants than peel peels. The higher the antioxidant level, the more free radicals can scavenge.

This does not mean that cooked peels do not have any benefits; they are better at inhibiting nitric oxide activity. Nitric oxide acts as a signaling molecule in the body and plays an important role in certain functions of the body. However, too much nitric oxide in the body causes inflammation and chronic diseases. Researchers are exploring how blocking nitric oxide can lead to more positive outcomes in diseases.

Liver and prostate support

The carotenoids and antioxidants in bananas can also help other organs. In a 2016 study Experimental and curative therapy, The researchers looked at banana peels to protect the liver.

Polyphenols from banana peels increase the body’s main detox hormone glutathione. The shells also reduce inflammation and protect liver cells.

According to the Mayo Clinic, as men age, it is common for the prostate gland to enlarge, causing bladder problems. Research suggests that banana peel juice may support prostate health.

A tasty way to detox

Scientists are looking for banana peels as a way to purify water. They think they will act as advertisers and be bound by heavy metals and pesticides, such as charcoal.

In 2013, scientists used banana peels to remove pesticides from water. A 2020 article in BMC Chemistry Banana peel powder is also found, which removes toxic heavy metal chromium from water.

So what does all this mean for us? Although I’m not going to change the banana peels in my water filter anytime soon, eating banana peels can help detox.

Banana peel for better sleep

Both bananas and peels contain amino acids that our bodies need to make the blue hormone, melatonin. According to a Forbes article:

“Potassium and magnesium are natural muscle relaxants, and bananas are a good source of both. They also contain the amino acid L-tryptophan, which is converted to 5-HTP in the brain. 5-HTP is then converted to serotonin (relaxing neurotransmitter) and melatonin.

How to use banana peels

The big question is how do we use the benefits of banana peel? Fortunately, you’ll need to skip the raw, colorless bananas to see the results. You can even use banana peels in an organic garden or for pets.

Bananas for the garden

Because banana peels are high in nutrients, they have some uses in the garden. Here are some ways to add banana peels to your gardening routine:

  • Seed food Insert the banana peel into the hole when the seedlings are planted. This promotes nutrition when they first start.
  • Find Aphids – Place the banana peel around the base of the rose bushes and aphids of other plants (see this post for more information). Cover the animals with a little dirt to prevent them from attacking.
  • Fertilizer – Mix dried, ground banana peels into the soil or spread on top. Insects also love them.
  • Attract Butterflies – Add banana peels to the butterfly garden to attract these beautiful insects.
  • Garden Tea – Make compost tea with banana peels and warm water. After standing for a few days, use banana tea to water the plants in your garden.
  • Banana vinegar – Some plants, such as blueberries, grow in more acidic soils. You can ferment banana peels to reduce the mixture with water. Use a mixture of acid-loving plants. The method is the same as making apple cider vinegar, but with bananas instead of apple peels.
  • Compost – Like all fruits and vegetables, bananas strengthen the manure. Here’s how to get started.

Go for bananas to eat

Because they are so nutritious, scientists are studying banana peels for animal feed. Researchers have found that banana peel can safely replace a rabbit’s diet based on 100% common grains.

You can also add banana peels to chicken feed. While some poultry owners feed on their banana fruit, you can also use the peel. The chicken may not go for the whole banana peel, but the peel can be cut, dried and added to its normal skin.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, it is important to note that most bananas are heavily treated with pesticides. While they don’t make a list of EWG’s dirty dozen, they’re definitely not clean. Since peeling is a part of sprinkling, it is best to choose organic bananas here. Fortunately, they are widely available and very affordable.
