How Weed Can Help You Lose Weight, According to Science

“People assume that marijuana consumers are heavy because it increases appetite,” says Tom Clark, chair of the Indiana University South Bend Department of Biology. Clark and his team analyzed 17 studies, involving approximately 156,000 participants, and found that those using the vessel were drug-free. And their body mass index (BMI) is on average 7% less for a 6-foot boy, which is 15 pounds over. Most interestingly, obesity users are 30 to 35 percent less likely to become obese.

THC seems to impede metabolism over time, so even if it’s an early sign of munchies, it promotes metabolism – and then some. Clark says, “And if the modern strain has lost the effects of acne, but the metabolic rate remains high, I think the effects of reducing obesity will be even greater.”

And you don’t have to smoke repeatedly to lose pounds. A one-time user stops their metabolism for up to four weeks, so being high twice a month can significantly make you a trimmer.

The exact dose required is not clear, but THC is mandatory, as opposed to its more broad-based, non-psychoactive counterpart cannabidiol (CBD). The thinking is that our modern American diet is high in omega-6 fatty acids, which come from sources like vegetable oils and butter. At most, Omega-6 can cause inflammation in the body. It also accelerates a receptor called CB1R, which increases appetite and improves food taste, reduces metabolic rates, and stimulates fat storage. THCC is able to “talk” to the WBCR receptor and help restore homeostasis, Clark says. In other words, it can help reduce appetite and weight loss.

THC can also improve the gut biome, which also affects weight. Obesity is linked to the development of a group of bacteria called Firmicutes, and less than any other, Bacteroiditis. In a Canadian animal study at the University of Calgary, obese mice were given THC in a high-calorie diet. Their gut bacteria levels returned to normal, and they stopped gaining weight.

Still, the pot can’t ruin the bad food. “If you want to lose weight, you can’t put too much food into fat, sugar and artificial sweeteners,” says Myron Shizukovic, a biomedical researcher at Queens University in Ontario, Canada.

Not everyone is buying it. “The data on weight loss from cannabis is not solid,” says Diana Martinez, a psychology professor at Columbia University Medical Center in New York. “There are animal studies, but human research is based on self-reporting, so there is no way to know how much they are taking. To prove the theory that a study is needed by some people, TH C and placebo to others.

Martinez doesn’t have to be antipat. She says there are treatments for debilitating conditions – such as multiple sclerosis, chronic pain, and Crohn’s disease – that need more treatment options. But in the United States, the rules governing the THC must be loosened in research before it is widely read in human studies.

Unless you live in a state where recreational marijuana is legal, following this dietary advice will be difficult. And since there is a lack of ultimate science anyway, if you want to stick to a good diet and exercise, you will not be a burden.
