In the Battle of the Bulge, the points go to the beer. On a high-fat diet, a special mixture of vaccine extracts from rats fed slowly increased the weight of mice compared to mice that did not.
“Zanthomol, found at low levels in beer, improves obesity and metabolic syndrome in part by replacing gut microbiota,” says Adrian Gombert, a professor of biochemistry and biophysics at Oregon State University.
Zanthamol is not concentrated in beer enough to have a weight-loss effect, but a supplement made from hops may be down the road. For now, if you are worried about weight, still opt for light beer.
